When it comes to photography, particularly for weddings, you may think that taking a photograph is just that, however, the truth is that there are a number of different styles and approaches when it comes to wedding photography. One of these is reportage wedding photography.
Unless you are an expert in photography then there is a good chance that you won’t understand exactly what this entails. So, as experts in photography, we have put together our guide to reportage wedding photography and everything that you need to know.
A picture tells a thousand words
We all know that a photo is said to be able to tell the same as a thousand words. That if you really want to be able to communicate a story, an emotion, then you are going to need to have an image. This is the idea behind reportage wedding photography.
Reportage photography is a photo-journalistic approach to photography. Which means that you will be able to tell a story through pictures. It will capture events as they happen, there and then, in the moment. But, that said, they will never intrude or obstruct the moment.
This goes against the perceived approach to wedding photography which is to stop people and ask them to pose for photographs. Instead allowing events just to flow and capturing natural shots as and when they happen.
It’s not just pointing and clicking to capture the image
A common misconception when it comes to reportage photography is that it is easy to do. All you need to do is point the camera and capture the shot. However, this really isn’t the case. In order to get the very best shot, a skilled photographer will be able to plan ahead, assess any lighting and also wait until the perfect moment to take an image. Completely undetected.
This doesn’t mean that a photographer lurks in the shadows, armed with a long lens. Instead they are present, they are there in the moment, ready to capture the picture perfect moment. They are not in the way, they are not causing any delays or intruding on the celebrations.
It can be a hard balance to achieve, however, it is possible. The best thing about reportage photography is that when it goes right, it is going to lead to some amazing shots that are going to help you to keep some happy memories of your special day. Ready for you to look through when you need a reminder of just how great it was.
